In a rare and historic display of humility and community leadership, His Royal Majesty, Oba James Babatunde Ajiboye, Otutubiosun I, Ajigbotulu, the Elemure of Emure-Ekiti, led by example as he actively participated in this month’s Environmental Sanitation Exercise across Emure-Ekiti.

The sanitation exercise, which is held monthly as part of state-wide efforts to promote public hygiene and communal responsibility, took on a new meaning in Emure as the town witnessed its traditional ruler working side by side with residents, landlords’ associations, and various community groups to clean their environment.

For many, it was a symbolic and inspiring gesture that will remain etched in the town’s memory for years to come.

Addressing residents after the exercise, Oba Ajiboye expressed appreciation for their turnout and encouraged them to remain consistent in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. He emphasized that the development of Emure-Ekiti cannot rest on the shoulders of government alone but must be complemented by active citizen participation and a shared sense of responsibility.

“Cleanliness is next to godliness, but beyond that, a clean environment is essential for our health, dignity, and overall quality of life,” Kabiyesi said. “As citizens, we must take ownership of our communities. Government cannot do it alone. If we want a better Emure, we must all roll up our sleeves and be part of the process.”

The monarch also commended the various Landlords’ Associations from Oke Emure, Idamudu, Odo Emure, Ogbontioro, and other quarters of the town, for their commitment to community development. He used the opportunity to call for renewed unity and cooperation among all residents, irrespective of status, age, or background.

Notably, this edition of the environmental sanitation is the first to be observed under the reign of Oba Ajiboye, who was recently installed and presented with the staff of office by the Ekiti State Government. His active involvement drew widespread applause and was hailed as the first time in Emure’s modern history that a reigning monarch would physically participate in the monthly sanitation exercise.

Residents, young and old, were visibly moved and motivated by Kabiyesi’s presence. Some described it as a “humbling and unforgettable moment,” while others praised the monarch for leading from the front and setting a precedent for civic responsibility.

Mrs. Yetunde Ogundare, a market leader in Idamudu, described the experience as “a new dawn for Emure.”

“We have never seen something like this before. For Kabiyesi to walk with us, carry tools, and speak with us directly shows that we truly have a people-centered king. We feel valued and we are more determined to follow his lead,” she said.

Community leaders and youth organizations who joined the exercise also used the occasion to renew their commitment to sanitation, community service, and participation in local development initiatives.

The royal participation has since sparked conversations across Ekiti State about the evolving role of traditional rulers in modern civic engagement. Analysts have praised Oba Ajiboye’s approach as progressive, people-oriented and symbolic of a monarchy that is truly in touch with its subjects.

His Royal Majesty concluded the exercise by reiterating his vision for a cleaner, healthier and more united Emure-Ekiti, where traditional leadership works in active partnership with the people and government to build a sustainable future.
