Nigeria’s political and military elite on Saturday converged in Lagos to bid a final farewell to the late former Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (retd.), who passed away at the age of 71.
The solemn ceremony, held at St. John’s Military Church, Bonny Cantonment, Victoria Island, Lagos, drew dignitaries from across the country. Among them were former President Goodluck Jonathan; Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji; Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; first civilian Governor of Ekiti State, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo; and former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, among others.
Olubolade, a native of Ipoti-Ekiti in Ekiti State, served as Military Administrator of Bayelsa State between 1997 and 1998 and later as Minister of Police Affairs under President Jonathan. His remains were laid to rest in Lagos following the service.
Governor Oyebanji described the late Olubolade as “a gallant officer whose life of patriotism and selfless service to the development and growth of the country cannot be forgotten.” He lauded the deceased as one of Ekiti’s most illustrious sons and a decent politician whose legacy would be deeply missed.
Reflecting on the tributes from Olubolade’s children, the governor noted their depth and sincerity despite their brevity. “At a moment like this, there are so many questions we cannot answer. The only thing I commend to you is that you allow God to carry you and He will see you through,” he said, while praying for the family to find strength in their grief.
Representing her husband, Dame Patience Jonathan conveyed former President Jonathan’s tribute, hailing Olubolade as a “gallant naval officer who served the country with utmost loyalty.” She recalled his impactful tenure in Bayelsa State, where he left “unforgettable marks” in governance and development, as well as in other positions he held throughout his public service career.
The atmosphere at the funeral was one of solemn respect mixed with heartfelt memories, as friends, colleagues and loved ones celebrated the life of a man remembered for discipline, honour, and an unwavering commitment to the Nigerian nation.
