Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, on Monday, formally swore in Honourable Justice Lekan Ogunmoye as the sixth substantive Chief Judge of Ekiti State, charging him to uphold the integrity of the judiciary with courage, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to justice.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Ado-Ekiti, marked a significant milestone in the judicial history of the state, as Justice Ogunmoye officially assumes the position he had occupied in acting capacity since November 5, 2024, following the passing of his predecessor, Hon. Justice Oyewole Adeyeye.

Justice Ogunmoye’s appointment was confirmed by the Ekiti State House of Assembly on July 3, 2025, after his nomination by Governor Oyebanji was ratified by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in line with constitutional provisions.

A Call to Service Anchored in Integrity and Courage

In his address, Governor Oyebanji underscored the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding democracy and maintaining public trust in governance. He emphasized that the office of the Chief Judge is not merely a ceremonial title, but a sacred trust demanding fidelity to the Constitution, courage in decision-making, and a deep sense of duty.

“Your Lordship,” the Governor said, “history will not judge you by the accolades of today, but by the legacy you leave behind. Courage and integrity must be your constant companions. Let it be said, in years to come, that under your leadership, the Ekiti State Judiciary reached new heights—dispensing justice equitably, fearlessly, and efficiently to all, irrespective of status or circumstance.”

He affirmed that his administration remains committed to the autonomy of the judiciary, pledging continued investment in judicial infrastructure, welfare of judicial officers, and systemic reforms aimed at enhancing the efficiency of justice delivery across the state.

Preserving the Legacy of Judicial Excellence

Governor Oyebanji praised the longstanding reputation of the Ekiti judiciary for excellence, dignity, and adherence to due process. He urged the new Chief Judge to build on that legacy by raising the standards of service delivery and embracing modern legal practices.

“The judiciary in Ekiti has carved a noble identity—an institution grounded in integrity and professionalism,” he stated. “It is our collective duty to protect this heritage and continuously strive to improve. We must raise the bar, modernise our systems, and ensure our courts operate at par with global best practices.”

He further noted Justice Ogunmoye’s distinguished track record, describing his rise through the ranks—from State Counsel to Solicitor-General, and eventually to a High Court Judge with nearly two decades on the bench—as a testament to his competence, administrative acumen, and judicial depth.

Due Process and Rule of Law Prevail — Apata, SAN

Earlier in his remarks, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata (SAN), lauded Governor Oyebanji’s fidelity to constitutionalism and due process in the appointment of the Chief Judge.

Apata confirmed that the appointment was in strict compliance with Section 271 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Governor to appoint a Chief Judge on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council and subject to confirmation by the State House of Assembly.

He also applauded the administration’s continued respect for the doctrine of separation of powers and its demonstrated support for judicial independence.

Justice Ogunmoye: A Vision for a Digitally Driven Judiciary

In his acceptance speech, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye expressed profound gratitude to Governor Oyebanji, the NJC, and the people of Ekiti State for the confidence reposed in him.

He described his elevation as both a privilege and a solemn responsibility, pledging to uphold the Constitution and to discharge his duties without fear or favour.

“My vision is to embrace digital transformation to enhance the speed, transparency, and accessibility of the judicial process,” Justice Ogunmoye said. “The world is evolving, and so must the judiciary. We must reform our systems to make them more responsive to the needs of the people, particularly in areas of case management, court automation, and legal research.”

He reiterated his resolve to promote discipline within the bench and bar, and to foster a culture of service, integrity, and accountability across the entire judicial architecture of the state.

Dignitaries and Stakeholders Laud Appointment

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by an array of top government functionaries, judicial officers, traditional rulers, and members of the legal community.

Among those present were the President of the Ekiti State Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Monisade Abodunde; the Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Folakemi Olomojobi; members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly; members of the State Executive Council; and royal fathers, including the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe Aladesanmi III.

Also in attendance were senior advocates, magistrates, and legal luminaries from across the state, many of whom commended the Governor for fostering an enabling environment for judicial excellence and for appointing a Chief Judge with “impeccable credentials and unquestionable integrity.”

A Legacy in the Making

With his formal swearing-in, Justice Ogunmoye begins a new chapter in the judicial evolution of Ekiti State. His leadership comes at a time of heightened public expectations and increasing demand for a transparent, accessible, and efficient legal system.

Observers say his performance will not only shape the trajectory of judicial reforms in the state but will also influence the broader conversation around judicial accountability and innovation in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
